The honest review
The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel's strongest case is simple: there is no experience in family travel that produces the specific reaction that Rovaniemi in December produces in children ages 4–10. The combination of Santa's actual presence (Santa Claus Village is a real, operating tourist infrastructure with individually-timed Santa encounters in a private office, letters sent to your home address, and fully staffed elves), husky sled rides, reindeer sleighs, falling snow, and the possibility of northern lights — witnessed from a glass-roofed treehouse cabin while in pajamas — is singular.
The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is the best accommodation base for this experience: 2km from Santa Claus Village (a short free shuttle ride), with its own husky safari and reindeer visit programs, glass-roofed TreeHouse Suites that make northern lights viewing a matter of looking up from bed, and an Arctic restaurant serving genuinely Lappish cuisine (reindeer, arctic char, cloudberry) that educates children about the food culture of the Arctic circle.
For summer travel (June–July), the midnight sun is the draw — complete daylight at midnight, which children find genuinely disorienting and magical, plus river rafting, mountain biking, and canoeing on the Kemijoki River. Summer rates are significantly lower than December.
The practical caveat: Rovaniemi is 830km north of Helsinki (1.5-hour flight or 12-hour overnight train). For most families, flying from Helsinki via Finnair is the approach. Build 2–3 nights minimum; one night in the Arctic feels insufficient given travel logistics.
