Orlando is the most-visited family destination in the country for one reason: it packs Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, LEGOLAND, Kennedy Space Center, and a half-dozen water parks into a 40-mile radius. No other US city even competes on theme-park density. The flip side is that planning a good Orlando trip takes more legwork than any other family vacation you will book — the parks are gamified, the pricing changes daily, and the wrong hotel can cost you two hours per day in transit.

The first real decision is Disney vs. Universal. If your kids are under 7, Disney wins — the character interactions, the slower rides, the Magic Kingdom "wow" on day one, and the genuine theming all over-index for that age. Universal has Seuss Landing and the (excellent) Hogwarts Express, but most of its lineup is built around roller coasters and 40-inch height minimums. By age 8, the math flips: Universal's Wizarding World holds older kids longer than anything at Disney, and Express Pass (included with Loews on-site stays) lets you skip nearly every line. We see a lot of families do Disney once when kids are 5-7, then transition to Universal for the rest of the elementary years.

The on-site vs. off-site decision is mostly about your trip length. For trips of 4+ days, on-site at Disney is worth the premium — Early Theme Park Entry, free airport-free transit between parks, and the ability to walk back to the room for a midday pool break save you real money in childcare meltdowns. For 2-3 night trips or families who are doing Disney as one piece of a Florida road trip, an off-site condo at Bonnet Creek or a suite at Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee is the smarter spend.

One last thing nobody tells first-timers: the airport transfer is the most stressful part of the trip. MCO to most Disney/Universal hotels is a 25-40 minute drive. Disney's old Magical Express bus is gone (ended in 2022), so you're renting a car, taking Mears Connect ($16-$32 per person round-trip), or paying $60-$90 for an Uber XL. Book this before you fly — the rideshare line at MCO after a 6pm arrival is a real experience.
