The honest review

Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon earns its familyFactor score almost entirely on location: the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is Iceland's most photographed natural feature — a freshwater lagoon filled with calved icebergs floating toward the ocean — and this hotel is the only accommodation within walking distance. The icebergs are visible from the panoramic restaurant, which means your children eat breakfast watching naturally-lit blue and white ice formations drift toward the sea. That image does something to children's sense of what the world can look like.

Diamond Beach is a 5-minute walk — where the icebergs that make it to the ocean wash up on a black volcanic sand beach as transparent ice diamonds. Morning light makes it extraordinary. The experience requires no booking, no guide, and no special equipment; you just walk there before other tourists arrive.

The glacier hikes depart from nearby and are the organized activity most families book — Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, is accessible for guided walks appropriate for children 10+ with reasonable fitness. The Zodiac boat tours on the lagoon (operated by separate companies nearby) allow families to get among the icebergs at water level.

The hotel itself is a functional modern build rather than a luxury property — clean, comfortable, warm, with helpful staff who run a small bar and the glacier-view restaurant. The kid amenities score reflects that this is a touring destination hotel rather than a family resort: no pool, no kids' club, no programming. You're there because of what's outside the door, not what's inside. For families with teens doing an Iceland road trip, it's an essential stop.
