The honest review
Grand Hotel de la Minerve occupies a 17th-century palazzo on the Piazza della Minerva, directly in front of Bernini's famous elephant and obelisk, with the Pantheon visible from the corner of the building. This location is absurd in the best possible way — you can bring the children to walk around the Pantheon before breakfast and be back for the buffet. Piazza Navona with its street performers and gelato is a five-minute walk through cobblestone lanes.
For families doing Rome as a cultural trip (older children, tweens, or teenagers interested in history), this eliminates every transport headache. The Colosseum and Vatican require transportation, but everything in the historic center — the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Campo de' Fiori, Trastevere — is within 20 minutes on foot. This is fundamentally a different travel experience than staying in a suburban hotel and taking taxis everywhere.
The hotel manages the palazzo conversion admirably. Family suites are available; connecting rooms can be requested; the rooms are elegant without feeling untouchable. The rooftop terrace is a legitimate highlight — it offers a Rome skyline view that puts the entire city in context.
The FamilyFactor of 74 reflects the honest limitations: no pool (this is a palazzo in a historic center — there simply isn't room), minimal kids' programming, and room sizes that are European-standard rather than American-spacious. For families with young children who need pool time and dedicated kids activities, Cavalieri is the better choice. For families with older children for whom Rome is a classroom, La Minerve's location is the asset nothing else can replicate.
