The honest review
Franklyn D Resort & Spa in Runaway Bay occupies a specific and almost unchallenged niche in the Caribbean all-inclusive market: it is, first and foremost, a resort engineered around young children and the parents who are quietly desperate for a break. The property has been operating since the 1980s and its Vacation Nanny programme — one trained nanny assigned exclusively to your suite for the length of your stay — remains the headline feature and the reason most families book here rather than anywhere else on the island.
The nanny arrangement is more structured than most families expect. Your nanny is present for agreed daytime hours (typically around eight hours per day), assists with meals, bath time, and bedtime routines, participates in beach and pool time, and joins the family for activities. They are not a hotel employee you share with a corridor of other guests; they are yours. For parents of toddlers or infants this is genuinely transformative — you can sit at the bar, take a spa treatment, or simply read a book on the beach without one eye permanently trained on a small person near the water. FDR's Kids Club supplements this with group programming for older children, including beach games, arts and crafts, and evening entertainment, though it is less elaborate than the clubs you would find at a larger resort like Beaches Negril.
Accommodation is entirely suite-based, which is a meaningful advantage over standard hotel rooms. One-bedroom suites comfortably sleep a family of four; two- and three-bedroom configurations handle larger families or multi-generational groups. Suites are not especially modern — the décor is dated by contemporary resort standards and periodic refurbishments have been uneven — but they are spacious, have separate living areas, and the layouts genuinely work for families. Expect the property overall to feel more intimate and low-key than the mega-resorts along the Montego Bay strip, roughly 67 km (about 75 minutes) to the west.
The all-inclusive package covers meals across the main restaurant and grill, snacks, local and international beverages, and non-motorised water sports. Food quality is solid if not exceptional — Jamaican buffet staples and international options are well represented, portions are generous, and the kitchen is accustomed to feeding children at irregular hours. À la carte variety is limited compared to a five-restaurant resort, and picky eaters will find the menu range narrower than at a Sandals or Beaches property. The private beach is calm and well-suited to young children — the bay shelters it from significant wave action — and the pool area is clean and well-maintained, though the pool count (two main pools) is modest for the property size.
Where FDR loses points is on adult amenities and overall scale. The spa is small. Evening entertainment is family-friendly rather than sophisticated. There is no casino, no extensive water park, and the immediate area around Runaway Bay offers limited off-resort dining or excursion infrastructure compared to Ocho Rios (approximately 30 minutes east). Teens and tweens who have outgrown supervised kids' programming may find the property slow, and older children who want a water slide, a climbing wall, or a teen lounge will be under-served. The resort is also genuinely expensive relative to what the physical property delivers in terms of fit and finish — you are paying substantially for the nanny model, and if that is not your priority, the value calculation shifts considerably.
For its target audience — families with children aged roughly 2 to 10, particularly those with toddlers or infants — FDR is difficult to beat in the Caribbean all-inclusive category. The nanny concept is real, well-executed, and backed by decades of operational experience. Just go in with realistic expectations about resort scale, adult nightlife, and the age at which your children will have outgrown what this property does best.
