The honest review

Occidental at Xcaret Destination is built at the literal entrance to Xcaret Park, one of Mexico's best-known eco-archaeological attractions, with two direct entrances and roughly a 100-meter walk connecting the resort to the park gates. That geography is the whole story here: guests can add the Unlimited Xcaret Xperience (UXX) package, which gives repeat, all-day access to Xcaret's 40+ exhibits and attractions — underground rivers, a butterfly pavilion, a sea turtle nursery, cultural performances — for the entire length of the stay, rather than the single-day ticket most Riviera Maya vacationers buy separately at real expense.

One worthwhile clarification: the property's postal address is Playa del Carmen, but it sits south of the town center, adjacent to Xcaret Park rather than on Playa del Carmen's main 5th Avenue strip. Families expecting a walkable downtown should know this is a self-contained resort property, not a hotel a few blocks from Playa's shops and restaurants.

On-property, the resort runs at genuine scale: 765 rooms, seven pools, a private cove beach, 11 restaurants and bars, a Kids Club, and mini-golf. That scale keeps the all-inclusive feeling more like a proper resort than a boutique property, with the tradeoff that it can feel busy during peak weeks. Room product is solid rather than luxurious — standard rooms and junior suites cover most family configurations, though multi-room or connecting setups are worth booking directly for larger families.

Pricing lands moderate for the region — genuinely lower than most of this catalog's Riviera Maya luxury entries — which, combined with the Xcaret access, makes this one of the stronger value plays in the destination if a family plans to spend even one or two days actually inside the park. Families who don't care about Xcaret specifically should weigh whether the somewhat removed location (versus a Playa del Carmen or Tulum town-center stay) works for their trip.
