The honest review
Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya is part of the larger Iberostar Paraíso complex (Beach, Lindo, Maya, Del Mar) which shares a 60-acre beachfront property on Playa Paraíso, a calmer northern stretch of the Riviera Maya 20 minutes south of Cancun airport. Selection-tier guests get full access to all four resorts' restaurants, pools, and beaches.
The kid amenity headline is the Splash water park, five slides (two for kids under 8, three for older kids), a pirate ship play structure with water cannons, and a kid splash zone with fountain features. It's smaller than Hyatt Ziva Cancun's waterpark and Hard Rock Punta Cana's Woodward complex, but adequate for 3-4 days of pool focus before older kids want more.
StarCamp Kids Club (ages 4-12) runs daily 9am-9pm. Programming includes nature walks through the property's mangroves (Iberostar Paraíso has dedicated conservation areas), beach Olympics, cooking sessions, themed parties (pirate night, Mexican fiesta), and movie nights. Strong programming for ages 4-9; ages 10-12 may find it a bit on-rails.
For teens 13-17, Iberostar Stars provides a dedicated lounge with foosball, ping pong, board games, and weekly themed events (DJ workshops, mixology with mocktails). Smaller than Hard Rock's teen offering but functional.
Food: 8 restaurants and 9 bars across the Paraíso complex. Quality is mid-tier, better than Sandos and Royalton, below Hyatt Ziva and Grand Velas. The buffet at El Mercado is the workhorse. À la carte options: La Marina (seafood), El Caribeño (Caribbean), Tikai (Asian fusion), Mediterránea (Italian/Mediterranean). Reservations required at à la carte spots.
The direct beach access on Playa Paraíso is the structural advantage. The northern Riviera Maya beaches are calmer than southern (Tulum-area) beaches with stronger surf. Sand quality is exceptional (powder-white). Reef snorkeling is 200 yards offshore with included gear at the watersports center.
Where it loses points: parent recovery is the weakest score. The spa is decent but small. There's no real adults-only zone within Selection-tier. The adults-only pool only exists in higher-tier Iberostar Grand Paraíso (which requires upgrading). Decibel levels at main pools are high during peak season. For families specifically needing parent rest, Hyatt Ziva Cancun is the better pick at the trade of higher pricing.
For families specifically deciding between Riviera Maya all-inclusives: Iberostar Paraíso Maya is the budget pick that doesn't feel budget; Grand Velas Riviera Maya is the premium pick; Hard Rock Riviera Maya is the in-between tier with stronger teen programming. From $310/person/night for Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya vs $480/person at Hard Rock vs $650/person at Grand Velas.
