Rio Grande, on Puerto Rico's northeast coast, is best known as the gateway to El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system, and Wyndham Grand Rio Mar leans into that setting rather than fighting it. The 400-room resort sits between a beachfront stretch of Atlantic coastline and its own nature preserve, and the on-site programming reflects both halves: a children's pool with a waterslide and dive-in movie nights for the beach-resort side, plus trail walks, birdwatching, and seasonal turtle-nesting viewing for the rainforest side.

What separates this from a standard beach resort is the depth of the kids' program. Guests get a printed activity sheet at check-in listing the week's offerings, which have included salsa dancing lessons, arts and crafts, movie nights, guided nature walks, aqua aerobics, bingo, hair braiding, and bird walks — enough variety that different age groups can find something most days without parents having to plan it themselves. Honest tradeoffs: this is a large, full-service resort (two golf courses, extensive grounds) rather than an intimate boutique, so expect a bigger property to navigate with young kids in tow, and the rainforest-adjacent setting means humidity and rain showers are a regular part of the visit — pack accordingly. Some listings reference the property under a "San Juan" address despite being in Rio Grande, about 45 minutes from San Juan proper, so confirm drive times if you're planning to combine this with Old San Juan sightseeing.
