The honest review
The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch opened in 2002 as Ritz's flagship Colorado ski-and-summer mountain resort. The property sits in the gated Bachelor Gulch enclave, separated from Beaver Creek Village proper, with its own private chairlift connecting to Beaver Creek's ski terrain. The structural advantage as a family pick: ski-in/ski-out access without Beaver Creek Village crowds, plus year-round Forbes Five-Star service.
Winter ski advantage: Bachelor Gulch is part of the Beaver Creek resort but accessed by the Strawberry Park Express chairlift directly from the hotel base. No driving, no walking through Beaver Creek Village, no waiting for shuttles. Families ski straight from the breakfast buffet to the lift. The ski school (Beaver Creek's, accessed via Bachelor Gulch lift) is one of America's best, small groups, kid-focused instruction, certified instructors at every level.
Summer mountain advantage: Bachelor Gulch transitions into a summer adventure program from Memorial Day through mid-October. Resort runs daily kid-specific outdoor excursions: mountain biking, hiking the Beaver Creek trail network, fly fishing lessons on the Eagle River (Vail Valley's prime trout water), horseback riding at the on-property stables, and high-ropes course experiences.
Ritz Kids program (ages 5-12) is the year-round kids club. Daily themed activities including Colorado nature programming, S'mores roasting around the property fire pits, ranger talks (resort hosts wildlife biologists who lead nature walks), and snow-fort competitions in winter. $145/half-day, $195/day with lunch.
Three pools: Outdoor heated infinity pool with mountain views (year-round, even with snow), indoor family pool with kid splash zone, and adult-quiet pool at the spa. The heated outdoor pool in winter (with snow falling and steam rising) is one of the resort's signature photo moments.
Bachelor Gulch Spa is the parent recovery anchor. Forbes Five-Star, 17 treatment rooms with mountain views, hydrotherapy circuit, and dedicated couples suites. One of the top spas in Colorado.
Food: 5 restaurants on-property. BG WyldHorse is the headline. Western-American with wild game options. Buffalo Bar handles casual après-ski. Spago by Wolfgang Puck (summer-only) is the seasonal Italian-Pacific Rim spot. Kids menus throughout. Plus 3 in-property cafes for quick breakfasts and lunches.
Marriott Bonvoy loyalty integration matters. Kids stay free in parent's room, Bonvoy points earning at 6x on resort spend, and the property is bookable with Bonvoy points (typically 100,000-200,000 points/night). For families with substantial Bonvoy point balances, this can be the best-value Vail Valley booking.
Where it loses points: pricing is real ($895+/night, $1,400+ for family suites, peak ski season $2,000-$3,000+). Total 5-night Bachelor Gulch trip for a family of 4 with ski school, kids club, and dining runs $14,000-$22,000 plus lift tickets ($890-$1,800/family/day depending on season).
For families specifically deciding between Vail Valley resorts: The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch (refined service + private ski-in/out + Marriott Bonvoy), Park Hyatt Beaver Creek (refined + Beaver Creek Village walkable + Hyatt loyalty), The Lodge at Vail (Vail Village pedestrian walkability + RockResorts), Four Seasons Vail (most refined service in Vail). Bachelor Gulch wins for families that want Beaver Creek skiing + privacy + Marriott loyalty + summer programming.
For families specifically deciding among Colorado resorts: The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch (Vail Valley winter + summer), Park Hyatt Beaver Creek (Beaver Creek), The Broadmoor (Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak + cultural attractions). Each wins for different priorities. Bachelor Gulch wins specifically when the ski/snow-and-summer combo is the trip's anchor.
