The honest review
Let's start with the lake, because it's the whole reason you're here. Lake Coeur d'Alene is one of the most photogenic lakes in the American West — 25 miles long, 3 miles wide at its widest, surrounded by forested hills that turn gold in fall and stay green through summer. The resort sits at the north end of the lake where it meets downtown CDA, with virtually unobstructed views from most rooms. The first morning you wake up and open the curtains to that lake and those hills is genuinely one of the better hotel views in the Pacific Northwest.
The floating golf green on the 14th hole (commonly cited as the 18th — it's the final played hole regardless) is legitimately unique. There's no other floating green quite like this in the world. It's a floating island that the resort moves to three positions throughout the season, requiring golfers to assess distance across open water. For families with golfers, it's a bucket-list experience. For families who don't golf, it's a fun thing to see from a lake cruise boat. Either way, it's a CDA-specific experience you can only have here.
The marina and water access are the other structural advantages. Lake Coeur d'Alene is a recreational lake — clean water, warm enough for summer swimming (mid-70s°F surface in July-August), excellent for boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The resort's marina rents all of it. Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises operate narrated cruise boats that depart from the resort dock — the 1.5-hour cruise is genuinely good for families, covering the lake's main attractions including the floating green and the wooded coves of the southern arms.
Pool situation: two outdoor pools plus a heated lap pool. The outdoor pools are solid, though not waterpark-grade. There's no indoor waterpark, which means a rainy-day scenario leans on indoor hotel amenities. CDA has good indoor options nearby (museum, downtown shops, the resort spa), but it's worth knowing the on-property pool structure is outdoor-only.
Silverwood Theme Park is 30 minutes north in Athol, Idaho. This is the largest theme park in the Pacific Northwest — 70+ rides including four roller coasters, two full waterparks (Boulder Beach waterpark is separate admission), and themed areas for younger kids. A Silverwood day during a CDA Resort stay is almost mandatory for families with kids 6-14. It's 2026 pricing is roughly $75/adult, $65/child for the combined park, and it's a full 8-hour day if you commit. Book in advance for peak July-August days.
Tubbs Hill: the 2.2-mile loop trail that wraps around a rocky peninsula directly behind the resort is one of those surprise finds that makes CDA more than just a resort town. It's accessible from the resort property edge, takes about an hour, and has views that are genuinely rewarding. Good for kids 8+ who can handle mild trail terrain. Worth doing the morning of a Silverwood day, before the theme park heat.
Dining at the resort: Beverly's is the upscale dinner option — genuine fine dining with wine list, great views, not cheap. Bevande handles Italian casual. The Boardwalk is the lakeside casual option for lunch, beer, and burgers with kids. Quality overall is high for a resort restaurant operation.
Honest downsides: It's expensive by Idaho standards. Summer peak rates of $269+ for a base room, resort fee on top, marina rentals, Silverwood tickets — a 4-night family trip of 4 budgeted correctly runs $3,500-$6,000 all-in. That's not unusual for a comparable resort market, but it's real money. The crowds in July-August are noticeable — CDA is a popular Pacific Northwest summer destination and the resort is its anchor. Book early and know that pool chairs fill up by mid-morning.
For families choosing between Pacific Northwest summer lake destinations: CDA Resort wins for the combination of lake beauty, town walkability, water access, and Silverwood proximity. It's meaningfully better than anything available at Lake Chelan (Washington). If you want to drive to Mount Rainier or Olympic National Park instead of the lake, Seattle-area lodging makes more sense. But for a dedicated lake vacation with a theme park option, this is the strongest single property in the region.
