The honest review

The practical problem with Yosemite family trips is this: the in-park lodging (Yosemite Valley Lodge, Half Dome Village, Ahwahnee) books out 6-12 months in advance and prioritizes point-to-point access over comfort. Tenaya Lodge solves the problem differently — it's 2 miles from the south entrance at Fish Camp, offers full resort infrastructure, and runs a seasonal shuttle to the valley so you're not fighting parking every morning.

Location is the strongest score at 92, and it's deserved. Fish Camp at 5,000 feet puts you in genuine Sierra Nevada terrain with massive sugar pines around the property. The south entrance gate means you skip the crowded westside approach and enter near Mariposa Grove — the famous giant sequoias — which for many families is the most accessible Yosemite highlight. The valley is 40 minutes by car or shuttle, which is honest: you'll spend driving time every morning, but the access is real and reliable.

Kid amenities score 90, the highest in this group. Camp Tenaya is a structured kids program (ages 5-12) with nature activities, ranger talks, and outdoor exploration. Three pools — two outdoor, one indoor heated — mean swimming works regardless of mountain weather. The seasonal activity menu includes guided snowshoeing in winter, fly-fishing in summer, guided hikes year-round, and evening s'mores programs. This is a lot more than most Yosemite-adjacent lodging attempts.

Room configuration is solid at 86. Standard rooms comfortably sleep four; family suites give you additional square footage and more sleeping arrangements. The fireplace cabins offer a different rhythm — private, porch-fronted, surrounded by pine forest — for families who want separation from the main lodge activity. For multi-gen trips, the cabin option particularly works because grandparents can decompress in their own space.

Parent recovery at 84 reflects a genuine resort offering: the Sequoia Spa runs a full menu of treatments, and the Sierra Restaurant handles serious dinner without kids-menu limitations. The lodge bar has adult seating away from the family pool zone. That said, you're not at a luxury spa retreat — you're at a family mountain resort near a national park, and the energy matches accordingly.

Pricing at 78 is the honest weakness. Yosemite proximity carries a premium, and Tenaya's rates reflect it. Spring shoulder season (April-May) and fall (September-October, post-Labor Day) are meaningfully cheaper than summer and represent the best value windows. Summer crowds in the valley make shoulder season the better hiking experience anyway — fewer people, reasonable temps, most trails fully open.
