The honest review

Key West has a reputation as a party town, and it's not wrong — but it's also genuinely fun for families with kids old enough to appreciate the quirk. The challenge is that most of the island's accommodation sits on the Gulf side with no swimmable beach, and the city's famous sunsets and Duval Street scene aren't exactly engineered for 7-year-olds. Southernmost Beach Resort addresses the most concrete problem by occupying one of the few Atlantic-facing stretches with an actual sandy beach that kids can run into.

The three-pool campus is the practical day-structure for most family visits: the beach gets used in the morning before afternoon winds kick up, the pools take the rest of the day, and the beach bar means parents don't need to leave the property to eat lunch. Room configuration is standard hotel-format, so families of four are comfortable in a double-queen setup, but anything bigger should book a junior suite or plan to use connecting rooms.

Key West's real family draws — the Key West Aquarium, Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, the Butterfly Conservatory, sunset catamaran tours — are all within walking distance or a short Uber. The Duval Street nightlife is also walkable, which cuts both ways: it's convenient for parents who want to explore after kids' bedtime, but it also means the resort doesn't exist in a bubble. If your family's idea of vacation is a quiet resort campus, look at Islamorada instead.

The honest tradeoff: Key West is expensive and the family infrastructure is thinner than Orlando or Destin. But for families with tweens or teens who can handle a city vacation format — walking around, eating at real restaurants, doing boat tours — Southernmost gives them a genuine beach anchor in a destination that doesn't otherwise have one.
