The honest review
Mission Point Resort sits on a quieter, more secluded corner of Mackinac Island, east of the main downtown bustle, occupying a sprawling lakefront campus that gives children room to actually run around. Where Grand Hotel trades in grandeur and formality, Mission Point has clearly oriented itself around making family travel comfortable — and it largely succeeds.
The most important thing to know is that Mission Point offers two-bedroom family suites, which no other hotel on the island provides. For families with two children or more, having separate sleeping spaces is transformative — kids can stay up a little later without disturbing parents, and the logistics of nap schedules and early risers become manageable. The suites were recognized in Good Housekeeping's 2025 Family Travel Awards, specifically called out for the way they give kids independence while letting parents actually recover from travel.
The kids' club offers supervised programming with structured activities — parents have reported that staff go out of their way to make even very young children feel welcome and special. The resort's arcade room is a reliable rainy-day fallback, and the 18-hole putting course works well for families with mixed ages who want low-key outdoor time together. The outdoor pool area, while smaller than Grand Hotel's sprawling complex, is well-maintained and well-suited for younger swimmers.
The Lakeside Spa and Salon is the island's largest Aveda spa, and for parents who want an adult experience alongside the family programming, it is a genuine asset. The Observation Tower offers a surprisingly engaging few hours, with five floors of exhibits on Great Lakes and Mackinac Island history that hold up well for elementary-age kids and older.
Dining at Mission Point spans three on-site restaurants with enough variety to prevent the cabin-fever feeling that can set in when families are eating every meal in the same place for multiple nights. The resort does not impose the mandatory dining package that Grand Hotel does, which means families have more flexibility and control over meal spending.
On-site bike rentals make it easy to set off on island trails without having to haul gear from the ferry. The island's car-free environment means bikes and horse-drawn carriages are the only options anyway — and Mission Point's location gives access to quieter eastern trail routes that the downtown resorts can't match. Mission Point is also Mackinac Island's only dog-friendly resort, which is worth knowing for families traveling with pets.
The honest limitation is location: Mission Point is a pleasant 10–15 minute walk from downtown shops and the ferry landing, which can feel like a longer haul with tired toddlers in tow. But for most families, the trade-off of space, suite options, and a calmer atmosphere is well worth it. This is the resort that consistently earns repeat visits from families who've tried the island more than once.
