The honest review

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa sits directly on Ka'anapali Beach, on Maui's west side — a different resort corridor than the Wailea properties (Four Seasons, Fairmont Kea Lani, Andaz, Grand Wailea) that make up much of this catalog's Maui luxury tier. Ka'anapali is generally the more casual, family-volume side of the island's resort belt, and the Westin's centerpiece amenity fits that positioning perfectly: the Kawaiola Aquatic Playground.

At 87,000 square feet, the Aquatic Playground is genuinely water-park scale — six interconnected pools linked by a swim-through grotto, a 270-foot waterslide, a hidden whirlpool tucked into the landscaping, and a dedicated splash zone sized for younger kids who aren't ready for the slide. It's built to keep a family occupied for a full day without ever leaving the property, and it holds up well against this catalog's other Maui water features — it's larger than Fairmont Kea Lani's pool complex, though it doesn't match Grand Wailea's nine-pool, water-elevator scale a few miles down the coast in Wailea.

Importantly, the complex also carves out a separate adults-only infinity pool with its own jacuzzi — parents get a genuine quiet-water option without leaving the property or needing an adjacent adults-only sister resort the way the Hyatt Ziva/Zilara pairing in Jamaica works. That's a meaningful parent-recovery feature that some family-pool-first resorts skip entirely.

Beyond the pool complex, the resort's oceanfront position on Ka'anapali Beach — one of Maui's most recognized and consistently rated beaches — gives easy access to the paved Ka'anapali Beach Walk connecting to shopping and restaurants at Whalers Village, a short walk or trolley ride away. The on-site spa and multiple restaurants round out a standard full-service resort offering, though none of them are the property's headline draw the way the aquatic complex is.

Price-wise, the Westin sits in Ka'anapali's mid-tier range — noticeably below the ultra-luxury Wailea properties in this catalog's Maui section, which reflects both the different resort corridor and Westin's positioning relative to Four Seasons or Fairmont. Families trading some of Wailea's polish and quiet-beach exclusivity for a larger, livelier water feature and a lower rate will find that trade works in their favor here.

Who this fits: families whose trip priority is a resort-scale pool complex that can anchor multiple full days without leaving the property, at a price below Maui's ultra-luxury tier. Families chasing quieter beaches, higher-end dining, or all-suite room formats should look to this catalog's Wailea entries instead.
