The honest review
Montage Deer Valley sits atop Empire Pass on the slopes of Deer Valley Resort, and the location is simultaneously its greatest asset and its one genuine drawback: you're away from the bustle of Park City's Main Street, so dining and errands require a drive or resort shuttle. For families who want to plant themselves at the mountain and rarely leave, though, that trade-off is worth it.
The resort's Paintbox children's program is the clearest reason to choose Montage over competing Park City luxury properties. Kids ages 5 to 12 are sorted into themed daily sessions — winter crafts, snow play, baking, scavenger hunts, archery — run by a dedicated recreation team. Full-day and half-day sessions are available, so parents can take a morning ski run or spend an afternoon in the 35,000-square-foot spa without the mental overhead of a babysitter search. The spa itself features 29 treatment rooms and an indoor mosaic pool, which is notably quieter than the outdoor family pools during peak periods.
The Montage Merit Badge program gives older kids and tweens their own goal structure across 12 activities ranging from fly fishing to archery to snowshoeing. Upon completing all 12, kids earn a large silver 'Monty' pin — a bit theatrical, but genuinely motivating for the right age group. The bowling alley, billiards room, and game arcade in the family recreation area handle rainy afternoons or the post-ski wind-down hour before dinner.
Rooms are substantial by resort standards. The entry-level deluxe rooms are generous, and the Resort View Suites at roughly 1,050 square feet have a separate living area that makes a real difference when you're traveling with children who go to bed before adults are ready to. Suites can be connected to adjoining rooms to create two- or three-bedroom configurations, which multi-generational groups will appreciate. Privately owned Montage Residences provide full kitchen setups for families who want to eat in.
Deer Valley is a skier-only mountain (no snowboards), which some families love for the lower-speed, crowd-controlled vibe on the slopes. Ski-in/ski-out access from the resort is genuine — no shuttle required. In summer, Deer Valley opens trails for mountain biking and hiking, and the concierge can arrange guided horseback rides, river rafting, and golf.
Pricing is the honest caveat. Montage Deer Valley is among the most expensive resorts in the Park City market, and peak ski season rates reflect that. Families who can spread the cost across a larger suite or a Residence, or who visit in shoulder season (May, September, early December), will find much more digestible rates with the multi-night discount applied. Resort fees and dining costs add up quickly, so budget conservatively.
