The honest review

The Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort has been a San Antonio family mainstay since 1993, but a multi-phase, $100 million renovation completed in 2026 has repositioned it into something genuinely different. The most dramatic addition is The Big Spring, a 2.2-acre crystal lagoon built with Crystal Lagoons technology. It delivers turquoise water, white sand beaches, premium cabanas with mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs, and water sports access — all in the middle of the Texas Hill Country, which makes the visual dissonance both absurd and delightful. Kids react to it the way kids react to any convincing beach: immediately and loudly.

The pre-existing five-acre water park remains the daily workhorse for families. The 950-foot Ramblin' River lazy river is notably well-designed — shaded by live oak trees and featuring a dark bottom that mimics a natural Texas float rather than the standard synthetic-blue resort tube channel. The FlowRider wave simulator separates this property from most comparable resorts; teens in particular gravitate toward it and it dramatically extends how long older kids stay engaged on-property. The two-story waterslide rounds out the active water options for the elementary-age set.

The ranch setting on 300 acres matters more than the acreage implies. Hiking and biking trails give active families a genuine outdoor alternative to the water park on cooler mornings. The 27-hole golf course provides a parent-recovery option that doesn't require leaving the property. Outdoor movies and campfire s'mores in the evening shift the energy from frenetic splashing to something calmer — and the s'mores specifically tend to land as a kid highlight that punches above its cost.

The recently renovated rooms now feature 65-inch smart TVs and updated ranch-inspired aesthetics. The conversion of double-double rooms to two-queen configurations is a quiet but meaningful improvement for families who need a third and fourth sleeping spot without booking a suite. The 4-bedroom villas at 2,330 square feet are genuinely practical for multi-generational groups — four private bedrooms, indoor-outdoor living spaces, dedicated villa host service, and private parking — at a price point that starts to make sense when split across two families.

Location next to SeaWorld San Antonio is the most obvious logistical benefit — you can reach the park in under five minutes, and the proximity makes a two-day SeaWorld itinerary natural without burning half a day in transit. Downtown San Antonio and the Riverwalk are roughly 20 minutes away. Overall this is a resort that has grown into its ambitions, and the lagoon addition specifically makes it worth reconsidering if you visited before 2026.
