Best Things to Do in Chicago, IL With Kids
Chicago family days: Shedd Aquarium (the lakefront ticket), a Chicago Architecture Center river cruise, Navy Pier only if you need the Centennial Wheel or a rainy indoor hour, Lincoln Park Zoo (free), and the Museum Campus pick — Field or MSI, not both in one day. The lake is the city's playground; the Magnificent Mile is not.

The lakefront aquarium that earns the ticket. Belugas and the Caribbean reef are the kid magnets. Book the earliest timed entry; you will still share the building, but you will share it less. This is the one Chicago museum most under-10s will ask to repeat.
Watch out: Peak summer and holiday weeks sell out. The 'total experience' upsells add up — decide before you hit the door. Food is expensive; pack snacks. Do not add the Field Museum the same afternoon.
2Area photo: File:Chicago River ferry.jpg: John… / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0)Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise
The family boat that is not a party deck. Docents who know the buildings, a skyline that makes sense from the water, and a length kids can finish. This is the Chicago activity adults remember and kids still tolerate.
Watch out: Book the official CAC cruise, not a generic 'skyline' boat if you want the commentary. Wind on the top deck is real. Under-6s may last 40 minutes. Winter cruises are a different product.

A free, finishable city zoo on the lakefront. This is how you recover from Shedd prices. Nature Boardwalk and the farm are the little-kid wins. Summer evenings are nicer than noon.
Watch out: Free means crowded on 70°F Saturdays. Paid parking is the trap — walk or bus if you can. Polar-bear viewing has lines. Pack lunch and eat on the lawn.
4Area photo: File:Chicago River ferry.jpg: John… / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0)Navy Pier Centennial Wheel
A 15-minute wheel ride and a long pier walk. Useful on a grey day or as a sunset add-on after the Shedd. The Children's Museum is next door if you need a true indoor hour. Do not build a day around the pier shops.
Watch out: It is touristy and the food is a convention-center menu. Winter wind will make kids hate the queue. Skip the 'all rides' upsell unless you have carnival kids and time to kill.
5Area photo: File:Chicago River ferry.jpg: John… / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0)Field Museum or MSI (pick one)
Field if your kids have a dinosaur phase (SUE is the reason). MSI if they want to press buttons, walk through a U-boat, and see a fairy castle. Both are excellent; both will ruin the second one if you stack them.
Watch out: Chicago CityPASS math only works if you will actually use three included venues. MSI is in Hyde Park — budget transit time. Field is on the same campus as Shedd; still do not do both in one day with under-10s.
Frequently asked
Shedd or Field Museum if we can only buy one?
Shedd for ages 4–9. Field for ages 8+ who already like dinosaurs or ancient Americas. Teens who hate aquariums can go Field or the architecture cruise.
Is Navy Pier worth a full afternoon?
No. Two hours including the wheel is the right dose. Spend the rest of the day at Lincoln Park or a museum.
Do we need a car?
Not if you stay near the Loop / Streeterville / Lincoln Park and use the bus, the L, and rideshares. A car is a downtown parking bill.
Activity budget for 4 days?
Plan $600–$1,000 for a family of 4 doing Shedd, the architecture cruise, and one more museum. Lincoln Park Zoo keeps one day cheap.
