Colorado Springs family days: Garden of the Gods (free, and the first morning), Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (the mountain-ridge zoo that is actually excellent), the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Cave of the Winds, and the Olympic & Paralympic Museum downtown. Altitude is the watch-out — do not stack the cog + a zoo hike on arrival day.

Free red rock that looks like a national park and is 15 minutes from most hotels. Paved trails, a visitor center, and a scale you can finish before lunch. This is the first-morning activity while you still have lungs.
Watch out: Parking lots fill by 9:30am in summer. Stay on trail — the park cites people who climb the fins. Afternoon storms. The trading-post area is a gift-shop funnel; you can skip it.

A legitimate mountain-ridge zoo with giraffe feeding that kids talk about for years. It is walkable but steep in spots — that is the charm and the fatigue. Better than another Garden-of-the-Gods loop on day two.
Watch out: Altitude + hills. Strollers with good brakes. Arrive at open; parking is not endless. Will-call lines in July. Do not stack this with Pikes Peak the same day.

The honest way to stand at 14,115 feet with kids. You sit, you climb, you get 30–40 minutes on top, you come down. The drive is free and miserable if someone gets altitude sick in a parking lot with no train to retreat on.
Watch out: Book weeks ahead in summer. Summit weather is 30–40°F colder than town — real jackets, not hoodies. Kids with ear issues or recent flights may hate the pressure change. Skip arrival day.

A real cave tour 15 minutes from downtown, with optional above-ground thrill add-ons. The Discovery cave tour is the family product. Save the Terror-dactyl and via ferrata for kids who already like heights.
Watch out: Caves are 54°F and dim — jackets, not flip-flops. Adventure add-ons have height/weight rules that will split the family. Manitou parking is its own project in summer.

Interactive, indoor, and actually about sport — not a hall of plaques. Best rainy day or arrival afternoon when you should not go to 14,000 feet. Downtown location makes lunch easy.
Watch out: Under-6s will bounce off some exhibits. Timed tickets on event weeks. It will not replace the zoo for little kids. Pair with America the Beautiful Park, not with the cog.
