Best Things to Do in Crete With Kids
Crete's best family days mix ancient history with beach time: Knossos Palace (the big Minoan ruin near Heraklion), Cretaquarium at Thalassocosmos (a reliable AC reset day), a Spinalonga Island boat trip from the Elounda side, Elafonisi's pink-sand lagoon beach (only if you're up for the long drive), and Aqua Plus Water Park on the Hersonissos strip.

Knossos Palace
Europe's most important Bronze Age archaeological site — the restored throne room and giant storage pithoi are the recognizable, photographed pieces. Close enough to Heraklion to pair with an aquarium day.
Watch out: Almost no shade and hot stone paths in summer. Without a guide the ruins read as 'old rocks' to under-10s. Tour buses peak midday — go early.
Cretaquarium (Thalassocosmos)
The largest aquarium in Greece, housed in a former naval base near Gournes, with thousands of Mediterranean specimens and touch pools for younger kids. Indoor and air-conditioned — the go-to reset on a scorching or rainy day.
Watch out: Gets busy with tour groups midday; go right at opening for the touch pool without a line.
Spinalonga Island Boat Trip
A former Venetian fortress and 20th-century leper colony on a dramatic island, reached by boat from Elounda, Agios Nikolaos, or Plaka. Usually paired with a swim stop.
Watch out: Little shade on the island itself in summer heat. The leprosy history can prompt hard questions from younger kids — worth a heads-up beforehand.
Elafonisi Beach Day Trip
Pink-tinted sand and a shallow lagoon that's genuinely warm and calm — one of the best toddler-safe swim spots in Greece once you're there.
Watch out: The drive is the catch: 1.5–2 hours from Chania, closer to 3 from Hersonissos, on a narrow mountain road — this is realistically a Chania-based day trip. Parking fills by mid-morning in summer; almost no natural shade on the sand.
Aqua Plus Water Park (Hersonissos)
The water park anchoring the Hersonissos family strip — dedicated slide zones by age, a lazy river, and a wave pool. The easy answer on a beach-fatigue day.
Watch out: Packed in July–August. Bring water shoes for hot pool decking; on-site food costs more than in town.
Frequently asked
Is Knossos worth it with young kids?
It lands better with kids 7+. There's almost no shade, the paths are uneven stone, and without context the ruins read as 'old rocks' to younger kids. A licensed guide makes a real difference.
Can we do Elafonisi as a day trip from Hersonissos?
You can, but budget the whole day for driving — it's closer to 3 hours each way from the Hersonissos strip versus 1.5–2 hours from a Chania base. If Elafonisi is a priority, consider basing part of your trip on the west side.
What's the best rainy-day or too-hot backup plan in Crete?
Cretaquarium at Thalassocosmos. Indoor, air-conditioned, and close to the Hersonissos hotel strip.
Are the water parks near Hersonissos good for toddlers?
Aqua Plus has a dedicated toddler pool separate from the bigger slides, which most Crete water parks do — check before you book if traveling with a child under 4.
