Kaanapali Beach & Black Rock Snorkel
Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa), the lava outcrop at the north end of Kaanapali Beach, is the easiest good snorkel on West Maui — turtles and reef fish cluster around the point most calm mornings, and you walk in from the sand instead of taking a boat. It's the one Lahaina-area activity that came through the fire completely unchanged.
Watch out: Mornings before 10am have the calmest water and fewest people; by afternoon the trade winds pick up and visibility drops. The rock ledge locals cliff-jump from is not for kids — stick to the sand entry.
West Maui Whale Watch (Dec–April)
Humpback whales winter in the Auau Channel between Maui, Lanai, and Molokai from roughly mid-December through April, and boats out of West Maui see breaching and tail-slapping whales within 20 minutes of leaving the dock most days in peak season (January–March). A public beach park just south of Whalers Village with a sandy, gentle entry and a healthy coral reef close to shore — an easier and less crowded alternative to Black Rock for families with younger or less confident swimmers. Turtles feed on the algae here regularly.
Watch out: Reef shoes help — there's exposed coral near shore at low tide. Lifeguards are on duty but the swim area isn't roped off, so watch distance from boat traffic further out.
