1Dolphin Research Center

General admission is a walking tour with presentations; structured add-on programs (including supervised dolphin interactions) are optional and separately priced, giving families more transparency and control than most Florida dolphin attractions.
Watch out: Full swim-with-dolphins add-on programs cost significantly more than general admission and book out weeks ahead. If the ethics of any captive-dolphin encounter concern you, the walking tour (no swim) still delivers the educational content without the add-on.
2Sombrero Beach

A free public beach with calm, shallow water, a playground, and picnic pavilions — one of the best swim beaches in the entire Florida Keys, and it costs nothing to get in.
Watch out: No lifeguard on duty at all hours — check the posted schedule before swimming. Midday sun is intense with little natural shade. Arrive early for parking during season.
3Pigeon Key Historic Village Ferry Tour

A former Flagler Railroad work camp, only reachable by the operator's own ferry (or seasonally by walking/biking Old Seven Mile Bridge) — a compact, genuinely interesting history stop for kids who like trains or old buildings.
Watch out: Limited shade on the island itself. The ferry departs on a set schedule, so plan the rest of the day around it. Unpaved paths are not stroller-friendly.
4Sombrero Reef Snorkel Trip

A protected shallow reef marked by a historic lighthouse structure, one of the healthier reef sites left in the middle Keys with decent visibility on calm days.
Watch out: Current over the reef can be moderate — kids need to be comfortable swimming and snorkeling unassisted. A smaller-boat operator generally means a less crowded reef experience.
5The Turtle Hospital Tour

A working sea turtle rehabilitation hospital, not staged as entertainment. The guided tour shows the recovery pools and explains what actually injures the turtles they treat, mostly boat strikes and fishing line — real education, real conservation work.
Watch out: Reservation required — no walk-ins, and tours sell out days ahead in season. Expect an educational tone rather than hands-on animal contact; this is a hospital, not a petting exhibit.
