Best Things to Do in Savannah, GA With Kids
Savannah family days: a Historic District square-hop on foot or a trolley, a riverboat on the Savannah River, Wormsloe (the oak avenue), a Tybee Island beach day, and the Owens-Thomas or a kid-tolerant house museum if someone needs indoor AC. Ghost tours after 8pm are for older kids; daytime history is for everyone else.

Historic District Squares Walk or Trolley
The city is the attraction. Forsyth Park fountain, a couple of squares, a cemetery gate, and ice cream is a complete morning. Use a trolley only when the heat index or a 4-year-old makes the grid too big.
Watch out: Summer humidity is the constraint. River Street brick will eat stroller wheels and ankles. Paid parking decks beat circling squares. Do not try to 'see every square.'
Savannah Riverboat Cruise
AC, a seat, and the port story. This is the rest hour that still feels like sightseeing. Daytime sightseeing cruises beat dinner/entertainment cruises with little kids.
Watch out: It is a large boat, not a skiff. Narration quality varies by sailing. Evening party energy shows up on some departures — read the product title. Book the earlier cruise.
Wormsloe Historic Site
The oak avenue is the photo, and it is worth the short drive. A small museum and ruins give the day a little structure. Picnic tables make it a lunch stop, not just a drive-through Instagram lane.
Watch out: The avenue is a one-way story — you will share it with 40 other families at 11am. Bugs after rain. It is not a beach and it is not a playground. Combine with Tybee or go back downtown; do not add three more historic sites.
Tybee Island Beach + Lighthouse
Savannah's beach day. The lighthouse climb is the kid goal (check kid-ability on the stairs). The beach is Atlantic — waves, not Gulf bathwater. Pack lunch; island food is a wait on Saturdays.
Watch out: 20–30 minutes each way plus bridge traffic. Lighthouse stairs are a lot of steps. Rip-current days happen. This is a different trip from a Historic District morning — do not sandwich them with a 5pm dinner reservation downtown.
Family-Coded Daytime History / House Tour
One house museum (Owens-Thomas, Davenport, or a junior-ranger-style program) gives older kids a room-by-room story and everyone air-conditioning. Pick a tour that says family or lasts under 75 minutes.
Watch out: Many house tours are 'do not touch' and will bore under-7s. Evening ghost tours can be actually frightening — read age notes. One indoor tour is enough.
Frequently asked
Do we need a trolley if we like walking?
Not in good weather with kids 7+. Buy the trolley if it is 95°F, you have a stroller-plus-toddler, or someone has limited walking range.
Is Tybee worth losing a historic-district day?
Yes if your kids need a beach to call the trip a beach trip. No if you only have two days — walk the squares and do the riverboat.
Are ghost tours OK for kids?
Some daytime / early-evening tours are silly-history. After-dark tours on colonial cemeteries can scare a 7-year-old. Read the operator's age note, not the marketing copy.
Activity budget for 4 days?
Plan $350–$700 for a family of 4 doing a trolley or riverboat, Wormsloe, and Tybee lighthouse. Walking the squares is free.
