Both Disney parks deliver core Disney magic. But they're built for different kinds of family trips. And the wrong choice can cost you $3,000+ in unnecessary spend or 3 exhausting days of failed plans.

Here's the honest comparison.

Cost: head-to-head math

5-night Disney trip, family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids ages 6 and 10):

TripHotelTicketsFoodFlightsTotal
Disney World value (Pop Century)$1,000-$1,400$2,288$900-$1,200$1,400-$1,800$6,800-$8,400
Disney World deluxe (Polynesian)$3,500-$4,800$3,200 + LL$1,500-$2,000$1,400-$1,800$11,000-$14,500
Disneyland off-property (Anaheim Marriott)$900-$1,400$1,680$700-$1,000$1,200-$1,800$4,800-$6,300
Disneyland on-property (Disneyland Hotel)$2,400-$3,200$1,680$1,100-$1,500$1,200-$1,800$7,000-$8,500

Honest read of the math: Disneyland is meaningfully cheaper for shorter trips and West Coast families. Disney World's premium tier hits $14,500+. Disneyland's premium tier tops out around $8,500. The flip happens at 5+ day trips where Disney World's multi-park pricing becomes more efficient.

Park scale and pace

Disneyland Resort covers 510 acres total — 2 parks (Disneyland Park + California Adventure) walking distance apart (5 minutes between gates), Downtown Disney shopping/dining district, and 3 on-property hotels. You can comfortably do both parks in 3-4 days, including park-hopping mid-day.

Walt Disney World covers 25,000 acres — 4 theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom), 2 water parks (Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach), 25+ resort hotels, golf courses, and Disney Springs. Properties are 5-15 minutes apart by bus/monorail/boat. You need 5+ days to experience properly, 7+ for a full immersion.

Kid age fit

Ages 2-4 (toddlers)

Disneyland wins decisively. The Fantasyland concentration of younger-kid rides (Dumbo, Peter Pan's Flight, It's a Small World, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride) is denser at Disneyland than Magic Kingdom. The walkable scale means less exhausted toddlers. Park-hopping back to the hotel for naps is easier. Crowds at Disneyland feel less overwhelming.

Ages 5-7

Disneyland still wins. Kids in this range need a mix of younger-kid rides and slightly bigger adventures. Disneyland delivers Fantasyland classics + age-appropriate thrills (Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway, Splash Mountain replacement). 4-day Disneyland trips work; 5-day Disney World trips often overwhelm.

Ages 8-12 (sweet spot)

Disney World wins. This is Disney World's structural advantage. Galaxy's Edge at Hollywood Studios (Rise of the Resistance, Smugglers Run), Pandora at Animal Kingdom (Avatar Flight of Passage, Na'vi River Journey), EPCOT's world-cultures pavilions. These don't exist at Disneyland and reward this age range specifically. Plus Animal Kingdom Lodge's savanna views and themed character dining options.

Ages 13-17 (teens)

Disney World wins by a wide margin. Hollywood Studios' Star Wars immersion and Galaxy's Edge experience are teen-defining. Animal Kingdom's Pandora and Expedition Everest deliver real thrill rides. EPCOT's Test Track and Mission: Space are teen-favorites. Disneyland has fewer teen-specific experiences.

Hotels: on-property vs off-property

Disney World

25+ on-property resorts including 5 deluxe (Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge, Animal Kingdom Lodge), 4 deluxe villa resorts (Disney Vacation Club), 6 moderate, 5 value, and partner hotels. The breadth is genuinely staggering. Plus Four Seasons Orlando and Gaylord Palms on-property non-Disney options.

Disneyland

Only 3 on-property Disney hotels: Disneyland Hotel (original 1955, recently renovated), Disney's Grand Californian (Craftsman-style, the only hotel with a private entrance into California Adventure), and Pixar Place Hotel. Off-property Anaheim has dozens of options (Marriott, Hyatt, Sheraton, Hilton) at meaningfully lower prices.

Crowds and timing

Disney World crowds: heaviest at Christmas/New Year, Spring Break, summer (June-August). Lightest in mid-January through early February and early-November. Crowds spread across 4 parks so individual park feel is moderate.

Disneyland crowds: heaviest at Christmas, Spring Break, July. Lightest in January (post-holidays) and mid-September. Crowds concentrate in 2 parks so peak-season feel is more intense than Disney World.

The right answer

Choose Disneyland if: kids are 2-7, trip length is 3-4 days, you live on the West Coast, family wants a less overwhelming Disney introduction, or budget is under $7,000.

Choose Disney World if: kids are 8+, trip length is 5+ days, you live on the East Coast, family wants 4-park variety, kids are Star Wars/Marvel obsessed, or family wants premium on-property hotel experience.
