Hotel Riu Guanacaste shares a stretch of Playa Matapalo with its sister property, Riu Palace Costa Rica, and the two resorts have quietly sorted their guests by vibe. Riu Palace markets itself with more of an adults-and-couples energy despite technically having a kids' club; Riu Guanacaste is the one where families actually show up in numbers, and Splash Water World — a real waterpark, not just a couple of slides bolted onto a pool — is the reason why.

At 701 rooms, this is a big, high-throughput resort, and it shows in both directions: six pools and eight bars mean you're rarely waiting in line for anything, but it also means peak-season crowds and a livelier, louder atmosphere than the boutique-feeling Costa Rica resorts further down this list. RiuLand Mini-Club runs supervised activities for younger kids, and the beachfront kids' pool gives toddlers a shallow, controlled space separate from the main pools.

Room fit is standard — Junior Suites are the top category, with no dedicated family-suite configuration — so families of five or more will need two rooms. Where Riu Guanacaste wins clearly against the Westin and JW Marriott on this list is pricing: at $260–360/night all-inclusive, it undercuts both by a meaningful margin while still delivering the waterpark and beach access families actually care about.

The honest tradeoff is atmosphere. This isn't a quiet, adult-recovery-focused resort — RIU's entertainment team runs daily activities and the property leans into an energetic, all-day-programming feel. Families who want that energy and a real waterpark at a lower price point will do well here; families chasing a quieter, more restrained luxury experience should look at the Westin instead.
