The honest review
Red Apple Inn occupies a particularly beautiful piece of land on Eden Isle, a peninsula that juts into Greers Ferry Lake just outside Heber Springs. The resort has been operating for more than six decades, and while it has always skewed toward couples and golfers, families with older kids or multi-generational groups will find it genuinely charming.
The property's greatest asset is its setting. The lake wraps around much of the island, and the views from the dining room, the pools, and many of the rooms are legitimately spectacular — Greers Ferry Lake is known for its clarity and blue-green color, and from Eden Isle you get some of the best panoramas of it. The two outdoor pools give kids somewhere to splash while parents decompress, and the forest trails on the property make for a pleasant morning walk before the heat sets in.
Families with teens or adults who golf will get more out of the resort than families with toddlers — this is not a property with a waterslide or a kids' club. But the lake activities (kayaking, fishing, boating) are all accessible nearby, and renting a boat for an afternoon from a marina close to the property is easy to arrange. The tennis and pickleball courts are popular and well-maintained.
Dining at the Red Apple Dining Room has been a draw for decades. The restaurant has been featured in Southern Living for its European-influenced menu with a Southern accent — think refined comfort food served with real care. Families appreciate being able to dress up slightly for dinner without driving anywhere; the casual bar and lounge is an option for nights when everyone just wants burgers.
The accommodation mix — hotel suites, condos, and lakefront houses — makes Red Apple Inn a reasonable choice for groups of different sizes. Condos and houses give families kitchen access and more room to spread out, which meaningfully reduces the daily cost of eating out. The hotel suites are well-appointed if you want a traditional resort experience.
Pricing leans moderate-to-upscale for the region. This is not a budget property, but compared to comparable resort experiences in the broader Ozarks it delivers solid value — particularly if you take advantage of packages that include dining credits. Fairfield Bay is about 15 minutes away by car if you want additional dining or activity variety.
One honest caveat: the kids' amenity set is limited by resort standards. If your family wants organized children's programming, a water park, or a sprawling activity calendar, this is not the right fit. But for families who want a beautiful, peaceful base on a spectacular Ozark lake — with good food, a pool, trails, and easy access to water sports — Red Apple Inn delivers in a way few Arkansas properties can match.
