The honest review

Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is a 2,000-acre resort community on Hilton Head Island, named one of Conde Nast Traveler's top 50 U.S. resorts, and its scale shows in the amenity list: three miles of oceanfront beach, an 11-mile freshwater lagoon system for kayaking and fishing, 25 miles of paved bike trails, and three distinct golf courses rated four stars or better by Fodor's.

For families, the lagoon system is arguably the best feature — a calm-water alternative to the ocean for younger kids, with canoe and kayak access built into the resort layout rather than requiring an off-site excursion. The Tennis & Pickleball Center, ranked among Tennis Magazine's 50 greatest U.S. tennis resorts, gives older kids and parents a genuine program to book into rather than a couple of unused courts.

Accommodations split between 1-4 bedroom villas (more flexible booking, better for smaller or split groups) and 3-6 bedroom standalone vacation homes (better for large multi-generational trips), all with full kitchens — a meaningful cost saver over a week-long Hilton Head stay given how expensive eating out on the island can get. Villa communities vary in exact distance from the beach and in furnishing quality since many units are individually owned, so checking the specific neighborhood (oceanfront vs. lagoon-side) matters when booking.

Pricing runs a wide range depending on unit size, proximity to the beach, and season — villas average around $500/night in peak season but can be found from $125/night off-peak, with December offering some of the best value for larger groups. Compared to neighboring Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes trades some of that resort's manicured exclusivity for a larger, more varied villa inventory and a genuinely excellent lagoon system that's hard to find elsewhere on the island.
