The honest review

Mohonk Mountain House is a good match for a family that wants meals, nature and a few hours of kids’ programming in one place. The historic resort sits beside Lake Mohonk in New Paltz, within the Hudson Valley. Your stay includes meals and non-alcoholic drinks, an indoor heated pool, hiking and scheduled activities. That makes it easier to plan a day around the resort instead of driving between attractions.

The Kids’ Club is the clearest reason to consider it with children ages 4–12. This complimentary drop-off program runs daily from mid-June through early September, then on weekends and school holidays during the rest of the year, except Easter and Christmas Day. Registration is limited. Look at the club schedule for your dates before planning adult time around a session. Younger children can enjoy the playground and gardens with an adult.

For older kids, choose the season around what your family enjoys. The resort’s family guide lists boating in the warmer months, an indoor pool year-round, and winter activities such as skating and snow tubing. Some activities have age requirements: children under 13 need an adult in a rowboat or canoe, while kayaking and paddleboarding are for ages 16 and up. Weather and the daily schedule shape the options on any given visit.

Rooms are individual rather than one standard family layout. Mohonk offers rooms and suites in the main Mountain House, plus suites at Grove Lodge a short walk away. Adjoining rooms are available on request. Give the resort every adult and child’s age, then choose the exact beds and layout you need. Ask the resort to confirm the sleeping capacity and whether your rooms share a connecting door.

The included-meals plan has useful limits to understand. Chef’s Table, the Carriage Lounge, room service and certain events cost extra. Spa treatments and the outdoor mineral pool are also separate, as are activities such as horseback rides, rock climbing and Via Ferrata. Compare the full stay total and cancellation terms for your dates, including the extras your family would choose.

Mohonk is especially worth a look for school-age children who enjoy nature and for families happy to spend most of the trip on the grounds. Teens can join family activities, while children under four need an adult’s plan outside the Kids’ Club. Start with the resort’s current rooms and family activities, then reserve the room arrangement that fits your group. Advance reservations are required to enter the grounds.
