The honest review

Niagara Falls, NY is one of the most underrated family destinations in the US and one of the most misunderstood. Most families either skip the US side entirely (assuming it's inferior to the Canadian side) or visit it as a day trip from Toronto. Both are mistakes. The US side has unique advantages, and the Sheraton Niagara Falls is positioned to access all of them on foot.

Let's address the US vs Canada question directly. The Canadian side has the famous panoramic view of both the Horseshoe Falls and American Falls — the postcard shot is from Ontario. But the US side has things Canada doesn't: Cave of the Winds (you walk to the base of Bridal Veil Falls on a wooden boardwalk and get soaked), the Maid of the Mist US dock (you board from the American side), Goat Island (you walk to the island between the falls), Prospect Point and Luna Island (steps from American Falls edge), and Niagara Falls State Park itself — America's oldest state park, free to enter. The US experience is more physical, more accessible, and for families with kids, often more memorable.

The Sheraton is positioned for all of it. Maid of the Mist US boarding dock is a 10-minute walk. Cave of the Winds and Goat Island are 15 minutes on foot. Niagara Falls State Park entrance is 5 minutes. You don't need a car for any of the primary family attractions.

Maid of the Mist is the non-negotiable. Kids under 12 who ride Maid of the Mist — the blue ponchos, the roar of the water, the sheer scale of Horseshoe Falls from water level — universally rate it among the highlights of the trip. Book tickets online in advance; walk-up lines in summer are 30-45 minutes. The ride is 20 minutes round-trip but worth every second. Wet is mandatory; embrace it.

Cave of the Winds is the second highlight. You take an elevator down to the base of Bridal Veil Falls and walk wooden walkways to within feet of the falling water. At the Hurricane Deck you are genuinely inside the spray — the ponchos they provide are the flimsiest protection possible. This is a soaking experience and kids ages 4-14 love it completely. Older teens sometimes think they're above it until they're not.

Goat Island: walkable from mainland, the island between the falls gives you unique viewpoints you can't get from anywhere else. In winter, ice forms on Goat Island in spectacular shapes. In summer, it's green and quiet compared to the main observation areas. Luna Island at the tip provides a direct perspective on Bridal Veil Falls.

The Sheraton itself: this is a competently operated 4-star Sheraton with all the brand standard amenities. The rooms are clean and well-maintained, the beds are comfortable, the indoor pool is a real asset for families staying in shoulder season (April, October) when outdoor options are cold. The restaurant is adequate. The Marriott Bonvoy loyalty integration means points earning and kids stay free in the same room.

Falls-view rooms are worth the premium. Upper-floor rooms facing east get direct views of American Falls. At night, Niagara Falls Illumination runs nightly (color-lit falls, visible from the hotel) — watching from your room is legitimately memorable for kids. The difference between a city-view room ($40 cheaper/night) and a falls-view room is real.

Logistics: Niagara Falls, NY is 30 minutes from Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF). The surrounding American city of Niagara Falls, NY has a complicated history and limited dining/entertainment options beyond the immediate falls area. Rainbow Mall near the falls has tourist-oriented dining. For better food, the falls-adjacent area has improved but plan to Uber 10-15 minutes to find non-chain restaurants. The Canadian side (Niagara Falls, ON) has substantially better dining and entertainment — it's a 20-minute drive and crossing the Rainbow Bridge is easy with valid IDs.
