The honest review
DoubleTree by Hilton Niagara Falls NY is positioned in the falls district, close enough to Niagara Falls State Park to be walkable to all the primary attractions. It occupies the middle tier of US-side lodging: not as positioned or polished as the Sheraton, not as modern or room-configuration-forward as Hyatt Place, but priced between them and available on Hilton Honors, which is a meaningful consideration for families who've accumulated points through Hilton-affiliated business travel.
The straightforward case for the DoubleTree: if you're a Hilton Honors family, this is your US-side Niagara Falls option. The Sheraton points to Marriott Bonvoy. Hyatt Place points to World of Hyatt. The DoubleTree covers the Hilton loyalty base. At current redemption rates, 2-3 nights on Hilton points is achievable for most regular Hilton users.
Falls-view rooms exist on upper floors and are worth requesting at booking. The views are of American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls — not as panoramic as the Canadian side's horseshoe view, but legitimately striking, especially with the nightly illumination. The Niagara Falls Illumination program (nightly, typically 9-10pm through midnight) turns the falls different colors and is visible from upper-floor east-facing rooms. Kids remember watching it from the window.
The indoor pool handles the shoulder-season and rainy-day problem that affects every Niagara Falls trip. You will likely have at least one cold or wet day; an indoor pool gives kids somewhere to burn energy.
On-site dining is restaurant and bar standard — breakfast buffet and dinner service. Not destination dining, but functional for the family that wants to eat in without Ubering.
The DoubleTree's location means the walking-access story is the same as the other US-side walkable hotels: Maid of the Mist is 10-15 minutes on foot, Cave of the Winds is 15-20 minutes, the state park entrance is close. Book Maid of the Mist in advance online — the US dock sells out in summer and lines without pre-booked tickets are long.
The warm cookie on check-in: this sounds small and it genuinely lands well for families arriving after a long travel day with hungry kids. It's a DoubleTree brand staple and it does its job.
Where the DoubleTree shows limitations: the building is an older tower that has been updated but not fully renovated. Room finishes vary somewhat between floors. The spa amenity doesn't exist at this property. Parking is a separate fee (budget $20-25/day), which adds up on a multi-night stay and makes the Hyatt Place free parking more meaningful for driving families.
Bottom line: the DoubleTree is the right pick for Hilton Honors families and for travelers who want falls proximity and an on-site restaurant without paying Sheraton pricing. The Sheraton edges it on location polish and room views; Hyatt Place edges it on room configuration and free breakfast. The DoubleTree is the reasonable middle path.
