The honest review

The Catamaran has operated on this strip of Pacific Beach since 1958, and its location remains the reason families pick it. The resort's back lawn opens onto a Mission Bay beach with calm, flat water — the kind young kids can actually swim in — while the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Beach boardwalk sit directly across the street. Very few properties anywhere give you both water types within a two-minute walk.

The Polynesian theming is committed rather than token: tropical gardens with koi ponds, tiki torches at night, and resident parrots in the lobby atrium that reliably stop kids in their tracks. The heated pool and hot tub overlook the bay, and paddleboard and bike rentals on-site cover the two default Mission Bay activities. The boardwalk position means older kids and teens can bike or walk to Belmont Park's roller coaster and the Pacific Beach food strip without a car — a genuine advantage over the more isolated Mission Bay resorts.

What it doesn't have matters too: there's no kids' club or structured children's programming, and no waterpark-style pool complex — the water amenities here are the bay and the ocean themselves. Room capacity tops out at five people (beachfront rooms, studios, and beachfront suites all max at 5), so families of six or more need two rooms. Rooms in the tower have the views; the garden-level rooms are quieter but darker.

On price, the Catamaran sits in San Diego's middle band: shoulder-season nights can dip under $200, while peak summer runs well past $300. Against Paradise Point across the bay, you trade the private-island seclusion and kids' camp for a walkable neighborhood and a lower typical rate. For families with school-age kids who want beach time plus the ability to walk to dinner and a boardwalk, that's often the better trade.
