The honest review

When Georgia O'Keeffe was one of your early guests and you've been operating continuously since 1931, you don't need to oversell yourself — and the Sagebrush Inn doesn't. This 156-room property on Paseo del Pueblo Sur is the kind of honest, well-run Southwest hotel that travelers often only find by asking locals where they actually stay.

For families, the value equation is hard to beat in a town where lodging prices climb steeply in ski season. The rooms are decorated in genuine Pueblo Revival style — hand-crafted furniture, regional artwork, warm earth tones — without the design-forward pretension that makes some boutique hotels feel unwelcoming with kids in tow. Standard rooms come with refrigerators, microwaves, and coffee makers, which matters when you're trying to manage breakfast costs for a family of four. Rollaway beds and cribs are available at a nominal charge.

The outdoor pool is the main warm-weather draw for kids, and it's solid — well-maintained and open 9am to 9pm. The adjacent hot tub extends the appeal for parents. But the amenity that makes the Sagebrush genuinely distinctive among Taos family hotels is the bowling alley on premises. It sounds like a novelty, but any parent who has dealt with an overtired nine-year-old who doesn't want another museum knows exactly how valuable an indoor activity option is. Kids genuinely love it, and it gives families a fun default plan on afternoons when mountain weather turns.

The Sagebrush Grill serves regionally inspired New Mexican food for dinner, and it's competent and reasonably priced. The Sagebrush Cantina picks up the energy on weekend evenings with live music and dancing — it creates a lively, welcoming atmosphere that multi-generational groups tend to enjoy together. It's not a quiet resort in the evenings, which is worth knowing if you're traveling with very young kids who go to bed early.

Location is a slight trade-off: the property sits on the main commercial corridor rather than in the historic core, which means it's a short drive rather than a walk to the Taos Plaza. That said, most Taos attractions require a car regardless of where you stay, and free parking here is a practical asset.

For families prioritizing value, space, and actual kid-friendly activities over spa services and curated interiors, the Sagebrush Inn & Suites is the most sensible choice in Taos. It delivers a genuine New Mexico experience without requiring you to spend $350 a night to get it.
