The honest review
Sierra del Sol Condominiums sit at 13 Thunderbird Road in the Taos Ski Valley village — which means when ski season is running, your kids can click into their bindings within two minutes of walking out the door. For ski-focused family trips, that proximity alone changes the character of the vacation. No shuttles, no rental car juggling at 7am, no wet gear dragged through hotel lobbies. You clip in, ski down, eat lunch at the base, and ski back up. It's the cleanest version of a ski trip.
The condos themselves range from studios to three-bedroom units, and the configuration matters a lot for families. The two-bedroom units that include a kid loft are the most popular family choice — the loft sleeps two children on twin beds and gives kids their own defined space, which veteran family travelers know is worth a significant premium in terms of trip harmony. The loft has a narrow ladder-style staircase and low headroom, so it works best for kids roughly ages 6–14; it's not practical for toddlers or adults. Three-bedroom units sleep 8–10 and are well-suited for multi-generational groups or two families sharing costs.
All units come with fully equipped kitchens, and at Taos Ski Valley — where on-mountain dining is expensive even by resort standards — having the ability to cook breakfast and pack lunches materially reduces daily costs. The wood-burning fireplaces are a genuine amenity at nearly 9,200 feet elevation, where evenings are cold even in late spring. Firewood is delivered to units during ski season, which is a nice touch. Private balconies offer mountain views that serve as a reliable background for the family photos that justify the trip.
Shared amenities are limited compared to a full-service hotel: there's an on-site hot tub (useful after ski days) and a laundromat (essential for week-long trips with ski gear). The village is compact and walkable to several restaurants and a small ski shop, which covers most needs without driving down the mountain.
The honest caveats: some reviews note WiFi can be inconsistent in certain units, and bed comfort is variable across the inventory since units are individually owned. Booking through Vacasa or VRBO gives you current photos and reviews for specific units, which is worth doing rather than booking blind. This is a rental product, not a hotel, and the experience varies by unit.
For families whose primary Taos goal is skiing Taos Mountain's famously challenging terrain — or who want a summer hiking base inside the Sangre de Cristo Mountains — Sierra del Sol is the most practical family choice in the valley.
