The honest review
Cimarron Lodge is a condo complex situated between Lift 7 and the San Miguel River on the edge of downtown Telluride — a location that threads the needle between ski access and town walkability in a way that few Telluride properties can match at its price point. For families, particularly those traveling with older kids and teenagers, it represents the most space-per-dollar available in the Telluride market.
The ski-in/ski-out setup is a genuine selling point. The Lift 7 chairlift sits directly adjacent to the complex, meaning kids can click into their skis from the building and be on the mountain in minutes. The caveat is that this is lift-specific access — on days when Lift 7 is not operating, guests need to take the free gondola or town shuttle to access the rest of the mountain. This matters more in early and late season than at peak winter.
What distinguishes Cimarron Lodge from Telluride's hotel options is the condo format itself. Full kitchens in every unit are the core advantage for families: breakfast and lunch prepared in-unit can save $100+ per day relative to resort dining, and having a kitchen available for snacks, post-ski hot chocolate, and kid-specific meals reduces the dining logistics that exhaust parents on vacation. Living room areas give families room to spread out after a day on the mountain. Select units include in-unit washer/dryers, which matter enormously on longer trips with children.
The shared hot tubs are a crowd-pleaser for winding down after ski days. The San Miguel River Trail runs directly past the complex — a paved trail that connects to downtown Telluride in about ten minutes on foot, passing through a pleasant riverside stretch. In summer, this trail and the adjacent river are entertaining for kids in their own right.
Town Park, Telluride's main public park, is a short walk from the complex and includes a fishing pond, public swimming pool (summer), playground, and the festival grounds where Telluride's famous music and film events take place. For summer families, the park effectively functions as a second amenity set for the lodge.
The limitations are real. This is a condo complex, not a hotel — concierge services, daily housekeeping, and resort amenities are not standard. Unit quality varies meaningfully depending on which unit you book and which property management company holds it (Lodging in Telluride and AvantStay both manage units here). Read individual unit reviews rather than the complex average. Some units have been flagged for cleanliness inconsistencies. There is no pool, no kids club, and no restaurant on-site.
For budget-conscious families or larger groups (three-bedroom units accommodate 6–8 guests) who want real ski access, a full kitchen, and the character of staying in the historic Telluride town corridor rather than Mountain Village, Cimarron Lodge is the most sensible choice in its category.
