The honest review

Schloss Elmau is best understood as a Bavarian castle that has genuinely engineered family travel rather than accommodated it. Most luxury mountain resorts have a kids' club as an amenity. Schloss Elmau has a dedicated family wing (Retreat), two age-segmented kids' clubs with professional programming, a children's spa with age-appropriate treatments, and an indoor climbing wall — all in a property that simultaneously runs high-level cultural programs (classical music, literary events) for adults who want intellectual engagement while their children are occupied.

The Karwendel Alps backdrop is exceptional: the Wetterstein massif is visible from most guest-facing rooms and the hotel sits in a protected valley that prevents the ski-resort commercialization you find in Kitzbühel or Garmisch. In summer, the hiking directly from the hotel grounds is some of the most accessible high-alpine terrain in Bavaria — well-marked, family-appropriate, with cable cars to eliminate the hard vertical gain for younger children.

The kids' clubs run 9am–9pm daily, which is genuinely useful logistics. The per-child rate (€130–180/night) includes full-day club access — comparable to paying for childcare separately in other resort contexts. The family pool has a water slide and shallow section. The adult recovery infrastructure (spa, adults-only pools, concert hall) is excellent; Schloss Elmau is legitimately good for parents as well as children.

The main limitation is price: this is one of the most expensive family hotel stays in Europe. The G7 summit has been hosted here twice — the security infrastructure and renovation cycles that brings have modernized the rooms considerably, but the rates reflect luxury positioning rather than family value. Worth it for the right family; not a budget-conscious choice.
