The honest review

Ocean Shores is a flat, sandy beach town at the end of a peninsula on Washington's Pacific Coast — and unlike the Puget Sound-facing beaches, the actual surf here is real Pacific Ocean. The beach is wide and long, good for kite flying, tide-pool hunting at low tide, and the kind of beachcombing (agates, sand dollars, Japanese glass floats in the lucky decades) that keeps kids occupied for hours.

The Shilo Inn is the most practical family choice in town: the suite configuration with kitchenettes removes the dependency on Ocean Shores' limited restaurant scene, the indoor pool is a genuine asset given the Pacific Northwest's coastal weather patterns (expect morning marine layer and afternoon clearing even in July), and the direct beach access means you can walk out with the kids in five minutes.

The town itself is the kind of place where families go for the beach, not the destination — go-kart tracks, bumper boats, miniature golf, and beachside candy shops fill the activity gaps. North Head Lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is worth the short drive. The Quinault Indian Nation operates the Quinault Beach Resort nearby if you want a slightly more polished option with a larger pool complex.
