The honest review

Zugspitz Resort sits at the foot of the Zugspitze (2,962m — Germany's highest mountain) in the small village of Grainau, which puts it at the convergence of two of the Bavarian Alps' best family experiences: Zugspitze access year-round (cable car to the summit in summer, ski area in winter) and Eibsee, a glacially clear alpine lake with a walking trail, pedal boats, and the best mountain-reflections-in-water photography in Bavaria, a 5-minute walk from the hotel.

In winter, the resort connects to the Zugspitze ski area — small by Austrian standards but excellent for learning-age children and families who want one ski area, properly explored, rather than a mega-pass they'll never fully use. The ski school on-site is the practical advantage. In summer, the lake swimming, mountain biking, and cable car summit days give a solid week of rotation.

The indoor waterpark addresses the German weather problem: when afternoon thunderstorms cancel outdoor plans (common in July–August in the Alps), the kids' afternoon is already sorted. The family suites sleeping 6 are practical for larger families avoiding the three-room workaround that pushes costs up at most European hotels.

At €180–350/night for a family room, this is the right entry point for families who want serious Alpine mountain experience without Schloss Elmau pricing.
